People, Planet, and Profit
As a Certified B Corporation, we take the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit seriously. We continually look for ways to improve our sustainability. Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. They are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Greyston belongs to a community of leaders driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good.
We have 78 bakers employed at the bakery through our Open Hiring Model. Together, they bake 34,000 pounds of brownies every day!
Our recipe for success includes our full-time care manager provided in partnership with Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS). The WJCS care manager provides support to Greyston bakery employees, ensuring they can access the community services and assistance they need to be successful in their apprenticeship and employment at Greyston. Since the addition of this position in 2016, 73% of our employees have completed a needs assessment resulting in 201 referrals to community services. Our Community Action Team is driven by bakers for bakers. Its goal is to take on volunteer activities and baker support initiatives.
As with every food production facility, creating our brownies results in inedible by-products. To minimize our waste, we have partnered with Wilenta Feed Inc., which specializes in transforming food manufacturing waste into animal feed. In 2017 we recycled 750K lbs of brownie waste!
The 21,000 square foot building that houses our bakery is LEED® Certified. The building’s passive energy design includes 36 solar panels that supply 15% of our energy. Fifty percent of our light is natural via a skylight atrium, three-story light shaft, and numerous windows. Strategic ventilation allows natural airflow throughout the bakery, eliminating excess heat from ovens during the summer and supplementing the primary ventilation system.
We chose the location of our building with our local employee base in mind, making walking and mass transit commuting manageable. We also wanted to contribute to the revitalization of the waterfront/industrial section of Yonkers. The site is capped to prevent the migration of pre-existing subterranean industrial pollution into the water table and ultimately the Hudson River.
As a social enterprise, profit fuels our Open Hiring Model, the supports we provide to our employees as well as other programming at Greyston.
We supply 7 million pounds of brownies to Ben & Jerry’s annually for inclusion in some of its best-loved ice cream flavors. Since 2012, we have also supplied Whole Foods Market with its Grab-and-Go brownies in store. Passengers flying with Delta Air Lines enjoy Greyston brownies on select flights. We also have an online store, selling our products directly to customers.
